Six drinking glasses stand in a row, with the first three full of water and the next three empty. What is the minimum number of moves to solve this puzzle?

-Take glass number 2 and pour into number 5. You could also use a big syringe to suck up water, and then you dont need to move any of them.

Question 2:

Use the Internet to research the history of the fast food chain McDonald`s and explain which parts of the SCAMPER model are evident in its development onto its current success.

Substitute: McDonald’s went from being a BBQ restaurant with a huge big menu to becoming the world’s best-known fast food chains. They developed the “Speedee Service System” which today is the basis of what we call “fast food”.

Combine:They combine their menus. For the children you get “happy meal” as a combination food, drink and toys.

Adapt: They changed their menus from being very large to simple. And today has a menu that can appeal to more people than when they started. You can get everything from salad to large burgers, deep-fried potatoes and children’s meal with toys.

Modify:They changed from being a family-run BBQ restaurant to becoming one of the world’s most famous fast food chains.

Put to another use: Fred Hill was a football player for the Philadelphia Eagles. He had a child affected by cancer. His problem was the start of the first children’s hospital: Ronald McDonald House.

Eliminate:They went from having a large menu to a small one. And from having waitresses to becoming a self service system.

Reverse or rearrange it: They have expanded their menu so that they reach several customer groups by incurring fish, salad, children’s menu and vegetables.

Question 3:

TASK: You are given a teaspoon as an object. Now apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques to it and give a brief explanation of what new product comes of this and how it can be marketed.

Substitute: The material spoon is made of can be replaced. The usual T-spoon is in metal, the one I have designed must be made in soft silicone.

Combine:The spoon can be combined with light that flashes.

Adapt: It can be adapted to children. In a suitable material that makes it easy for the child to hold it. And the flashing colors in the handle make it more fun for children and eat.

Modify:The size and appearance can be changed.

Put to another use: By making the handle interchangeable, the handle with the flashing light can be used as a toy.

Eliminate: The material spoon comes in must be eliminated and replaced in a more child-friendly material.

Reverse or rearrange it: By changing a little on the actual design of the spoon one can get a very good child-friendly spoon. By making the tip a little rounder, the food didn’t get that fast. And by making the handle thicker so it is easier for children to get a good grip on it.

By using the SCAMPER method I have designed a new spoon for children. It comes in soft silicone material and has one adaptive handle so that the child can hold it more easily. It has got a rounder tip so the food does not fall so quickly off the spoon.
The handle is removable and comes in transparent material. It is designed so that there is flashing light inside it. In this way it will be fun for kids to eat.

TASK : You have to design a packaging for rice. The packaging has to be different from what is out there in the market. Apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques and do a write-up on your findings. Then choose the option that you think would work best and do a sketch of what the packaging would look like.

Substitute: Replacing the ordinary cardboard with recyclable plastic, bamboo, wood, or other type of cardboard. As for example the material in the milk carton.

Combine: Combine the rice with different flavors. There may be a small package inside the box with different spice mixtures. Or dried herbs.

Adapt: One could make the carton in different sizes such as portion packs. Children’s portion, adult portion or family dinner (2 adults 2 children.)

Modify:The rice box can change shape and size. It can come in portion packages or in large economy packages.

Put to another use: The carton can be used to store other food when its empty.

Eliminate: The carton can be made in other shapes. It can be changed to a shape that makes it easier to pour and measure. Colors and text on the box can be replaced.

Reverse or rearrange it: If you replace the material and produce it in a type of recyclable plastic, you can make the rice in the box itself.

This was the final design. Here you have rice in a milk box shaped box. But it is a bit wider and lower. With the pouring spout from a milk carton it is easier to pour and portion. It has got a transparent side where you see how much is left.
